Biographical history

William "Bill" Smith was born in Geelong on 6 March 1929. He joined the Geelong Historical Society around 1961 and was responsible for producing several drawings relating to Geelong and district for the "Investigator" - a quarterly journal first produced by the Society in 1965. In 1969 Bill Smith was elected to the committee of the Geelong Historical Society and was made an Honorary Life Member in 2003. When the Society discovered Bill Smith's interest in photography, he was asked to record various homes and buildings in danger of demolition. In 1970 - 1972 he recorded recorded every street corner in central Geelong. In 2009, Bill Smith published the book "Sand, Fireworks and Boxthorn: the history of Breakwater and area". In 1991 he was awarded the National Medal of Australia for 15 or more years of service to the public Victoria for rendering first-aid with St. John Ambulance.
